Yunlei received his medical degree from Xinxiang Medical University and then a PhD from the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with Muming Poo and Shumin Dang showing the first evidence that astrocytes contribute to LTP through secretion of D-serine. As a postdoc with Qiang Zhou at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Yunlei studied synapse functional and structural plasticity associated with LTP. At Janelia, Yunlei has been investigating synaptic plasticity onto molecularly-defined neurons using chemical genetic, optogenetic, and cell type-specific electrophysiological techniques.
