We take a joint theory-experiment approach to understanding how groups of cells integrate information about their environment and each other to work together.
How do cells coordinate their behaviors? Cells work together in contexts ranging from soil microbes in distress to wound healing in the body. Our understanding of how these cellular collectives coordinate themselves is in its infancy when compared to what we know about how single cells function as individuals. This knowledge gap exists because of the conceptual and technological challenges presented by connecting microscale events happening on a timescale of seconds inside cells to the macroscale events occurring over hours in multicellular groups.
Projects in the lab focus on addressing these challenges to understand how multicellular behaviors are coordinated and how these behaviors affect whole organisms.
