As a kiwi from down under, James received his MSc(First Class Honours) and was the last PhD student of IUCr president Prof. Ted (Edward N.) Baker at The University of Auckland, New Zealand. James studied in protein X-ray crystallography of anti-bacterial drug target proteins and their ligands with emphasis on Tuberculosis. James gained his first cryo-EM experience with Prof. Leemor Joshua-Tor at Cold Spring Harbor, New York as an HHMI Postdoctoral Associate, working on viral capsids and ATP-dependent DNA replication initiation complexes. James subsequently joined Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich, Germany as a senior postdoc with Prof. Karl-Peter Hopfner, where he solved the full structure and sub-complexes of 15-subunit INO80 and other chromatin remodeler complexes. His journey led back southern to senior postdoc work at Prof. Daniel Watterson’s laboratory at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, solving asymmetric and pseudo-symmetric virus structures at high-resolution before joining Janelia. James developed an extensive portfolio in sample preparation and structure determination of wide-ranging and challenging sample types over the years across three continents, both in academia and industry.
