This workshop is affiliated with the "Fluorescent Proteins and Biological Sensors" conference that we run every other year. While the larger conference is often limited to more senior researchers, we intend for this smaller meeting to provide an exciting opportunity for graduate students and postdocs in the field to explore the latest advances, network with colleagues, discover potential next career steps, and generally have a good time.

Topics will cover many aspects of modern protein engineering, particularly as it pertains to making tools for biology. Examples include genetically encoded sensors for molecules or cellular states, light-, temperature-, or ligand-gated effectors of cell state, fluorescent proteins, labels for light or electron microscopy, tools for improving the performance and/or analysis of next-generation sequencing, viruses or other transgene delivery agents, etc.

Over the course of the week, attendees will present their work and partake in lively discussions on key problems and obstacles in the field, as well as what tools and approaches might be useful for future progress. We will also host several plenary talks from senior investigators.

This workshop will consist mainly of junior researchers, though there will be a few carefully selected relevant investigators on hand, tasked with ensuring that minds remain open, conversation is flowing and things are moving along accordingly.

It will be interactive, intense, and interdisciplinary. We see it as a unique learning opportunity for everyone involved and intend for it to be an enjoyable experience.

Ideally, participants will be comfortable presenting their results and the techniques used to get there. We want them to be able to follow the fairly intense schedule and contribute actively to discussions, and we especially encourage applications from female scientists.

In order to maintain a small group atmosphere, allowing for extensive interactions and discussion, space in the workshop is limited. Participants are expected to stay for the duration. Janelia will cover the cost of accommodation, meals and reasonable travel expenses.

Students and postdocs should feel free to come with half-baked ideas and expect an audience keen to help them talk through those ideas!
