Microscopy is at the essence of Janelia, and it permeates every stratum of our scientific, educational, and outreach programs. At Janelia, there are labs whose main research focus is developing transformative imaging technologies and approaches. Other Janelia labs leverage these microscopy frontiers to probe some of the most challenging questions in life sciences. Still other Janelia labs push the boundaries of computational image analysis and visualization. Janelia team projects have maintained a decades-long focus on cutting-edge microscopy to generate results, comprehensive physiological atlases, and imaging-related reagents with broad use to the research community.

Additionally, Janelia’s Scientific Operations teams are developing, implementing, and sharing imaging excellence with both our own labs through our shared resource facilities and with the broader research community through the Advanced Imaging Center. And we don’t just mean sharing microscopes. Scientific Operations teams are pushing the limits of all aspects of microscopy, including instrumentation and optics design and manufacturing, sample preparation methods development and application, multi-modal imaging including, adaptive imaging, correlative light and electron microscopy, cryo electron microscopy, and development of image analysis and visualization tools.
