Encoder Interface for Mouse Treadmill
Encoder/Driver Interface for Mouse Treadmill and other devices
Designed primarily for use with the rodent treadmill, the Encoder Interface provides an inexpensive and easy-to-build method to connect a quadrature encoder to serial and analog interfaces. The emphasis is on simplicity and ease of assembly. The interface reads the encoder and calculates speed and direction based on the time between encoder edge changes using the internal timer on the processor. Speed is updated every time it changes. If no changes are detected over set time (typically 50 milliseconds), the speed is set to 0. Distance is also accumulated. The USB-serial connection prints the distance and speed of every change. The analog output sets a voltage proportional to forward speed (as it is a unipolar output). The analog output range is 0 to 3.3 volts.
The calibration of speed, distance, and output voltage can all be customized. For example, if analog forward and reverse speeds are needed, users could offset the output such that 1.5 volts is 0 speed, and 0 to -1.5 volts is reverse, and 1.5 to 3 volts is forward. Another example would be to output the absolute speed and add a digital output to indicate forward or reverse.
