Spruston will oversee the research campus’s project teams, scientific operations, and scientific programs in a newly created leadership position.
Nelson Spruston has been named Chief of Janelia Scientific Operations and Programs, a new leadership position focused on implementing the research campus’s strategic vision. Spruston was most recently Janelia’s Senior Director of Scientific Programs.
In his new role, Spruston will work to advance the research campus’s strategic goals through leadership of Janelia’s project teams, scientific operations, and scientific programs.
Spruston came to Janelia to lead the science and training team in 2011 after spending 16 years on the faculty at Northwestern University. As the Senior Director of Scientific Programs, Spruston oversaw group leader and fellow recruitment and reviews; student, postdoctoral, and visiting scientist programs; and conferences and workshops. Spruston also leads a lab at Janelia exploring the role of the hippocampus in learning and memory, and he provides leadership on Janelia’s project team steering committees.
Spruston received a bachelor’s degree in Physiology from the University of British Columbia and holds a PhD in Neuroscience from Baylor College of Medicine. He did his postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. Spruston is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
