    • MARC or U-RISE scholar
    • Simons STEM Scholar at Stony Brook University
    • Chancellor’s Science Scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
    • Karsh STEM Scholar at Howard University

Application Materials

All applicants need to submit the following materials:

  • Scientific Professional Development Essay: In no more than 2 pages, please tell us your science career goals and then list up to 5 topics or aspects that you would like to learn at Janelia Research Campus this summer and why. Examples are provided in the online application.

  • Description of prior independent research (not research as part of a course) (up to 3500 characters)
  • Selecting Janelia Labs: For labs, current: Below their name, briefly describe (1500 characters or less) why your scientific interests have led you to select them. Please also rank by preference (e.g., 1, 2, 3)

Please describe why you find the lab’s research exciting and what you hope to learn in that lab this summer. Also rank labs by preference (e.g., 1, 2, 3). Please note that your answer here does not need to repeat the content of your Scientific Professional Development Essay, but you are welcome to include relevant points here if you wish. The information you provide will help us to match you with an appropriate Janelia scientist. We will make our best effort to match you with one of your Janelia scientist choices. See the list of labs taking summer students here.

  • List of completed science and math courses or submit an unofficial college transcript
  • Provide the names of two references who will submit a letter of recommendation. The strongest letters come from research supervisors who can speak to your ability to conduct independent research. However, you may use a course instructor, as well. Both letters of reference must be received before the full application can be submitted. We encourage you to start your application and contact your references well in advance of the deadline.
  • Top applicants will be contacted to schedule a Zoom interview.

Deadline to apply is January 14, 2025 3:00 PM EST

If you have questions about the application or the application process, you may email Erik Snapp at snappe@janelia.hhmi.org
